PATTIHIO
FOREST PARK.
Did you know that?
The Larnaca Municipality agreed to construct a restaurant, a skate park, training courts, children's playgrounds, a dog park, parking lots within Pattihio Forest Park in Alykes Larnacas.
They did so without a public consultation, violating the principles of the Aachen Convention that promote public participation in decision-making processes relating to the environment.
Must we tolerate these violations?
Pattihio Forest park is part of the Natura 2000 network covering Alykes Larnacas, and as such should be protected by strict Environmental laws.
The Cyprus Department of Environment together local authorities have effectively bypassed EU Regulation, giving the green light to construction.
Combined with existing and future environmental stressors, the park and Salt Lakes are slowly but surely under threat from human activities.
Now what?
The Municipality has not been responding to our letters requesting for further clarification.
This has raised serious concerns both from the public and professional bodies about the legitimacy of this project.
A portion of the forest is being converted into a parking lot and a restaurant.
